if the guy was pretty rough with it (looks like he was), then i would suggest getting all new u-joints and checking all the steering and suspension, and the wheel bearings and such, and greasing everything... wheeling through water and such is hard on anything that uses grease for lubrication
pretty tough looking jeep
he is selling it for 6k so i would have to handle that on my own

If it has the d35 rear axle be very gentle with it. Its a piece of shit. If it is full time 4wd you'll most likely get vibrations with the lift and there's not a whole lot of support for that t-case. It takes a lot of lift to clear a decent tire if your not willing to cut the body up.
will that be stamped somewhere? im trying to get the vin to verify
anyone look up a vin for me? i have it

If the rear diff is round it is a d35 if it looks like a sideways pear it is a aluminum D44. The vin won't show it. The vin will tell you engine, body type, trim level, gvw and maybe trans.

It should be a good rig though regardless of what axle it has. You just have to be easy on it. The 4.0 is a great motor and the WJ has a decent ride while stil being able to hang offroad.
Make sure the air conditioning works and that the floor/defrost/face vents all work and it switches between them.

the vin should be able to tell which axles it has... the dealership should be able to look it up, and even print the build sheet for you

If i'm not mistaken the d35 has a rubber fill plug and the d44's is metal. I'm picking up a 99 TJ this weekend for $1800.

She runs like a top. 155K on her,4.0L, 5 spd, new 31x10.50's and brakes. Only issues are a cracked fender flare and the front track bar bushings are gone so it wanders like crazy. It was still an awesome deal.
got it for 5500...need to do an oil change, new tires and check the leaking left rear axle. nothing major so i got it

the 4.0 is common for carbon buildup on the valves, if you ever have that problem use a good combustion chamber cleaner and it should take care of it.
other than that enjoy it, jeeps are a blast
oil change, cleaned IAC, cleaned TB, cleaned engine bay
purrs like a kitten
