View Full Version : 28" DR's for the street

I am thinking of running rear DR's full time, with the exception of winter. (if you can call that here in Az)

These will just be on the street and not the track.

My rims are 17x8 and i am currently running 28.9" tires (275/55/17's). Would like to keep my current fronts since there is plenty of tread life.

I live in a division that has about 4 miles of graded dirt road to and from my property.

So with that infomation what 28" DR's do you recommend for street use that can provide sufficent traction and SOME protection with every day road use elements?

Umm this will be on a 4/6 drop with caltracs, rear sway bar and no front sway bar.

Thanks.

Get the 325/45 m&h's. They are a lil harder than the mt's so that will be better for the street. I plan on running that tire full time too. Fuck 20's at this point lol

Idk. I was turned off on m&h tires for a while. That 1st set i had, man what an f'n joke they were. The 275/50's, they were so narrow it was just laughable. I killed them w/in a couple months & stuck w/ micky's ever since. I would run the 295's on the street but they are a lil short. I have a pic w/ the 295's on 1 side i will post later. I like the look but for the street maybe something just a lil taller

Looking at those but was not sure due to my rim width. Maybe 315/45 m&h's.. Umm to short.

They are almost the same as the 295/45's & i have the 295's on my durango rims.

nittos last on the street

I wouldn't drive a mt or M&h on a dirt road that has rocks in it. They have almost 0 puncture resistance. You can expect 5000 miles at most from the m&h's and even less from he mt's. Nittos are probably your best bet.

kay9
07-02-2010, 03:31 AM
Going with the Nittos would mean staggered with 18's in the rear and 17's on the front. I am not planning for any track time for 3-4 months so i might as well throw in the 488 gears and have fun. Better chance in getting rid of my 4:10's and using that towards 4:56's down the road.

Has anyone put the M&H 325/45/17's on a stock Ram rim? Stock rims are 7 or 8 inches wide, and 11 inch is suggested. Wondering if the tire is much to wide for stock rims. 275 will work, but not wide enough tread.

I wouldnt put a 325 tire on anything less than a 9.5" or 10" wheel

Here are the specs of the 2 tires:

325/45 m&h
Comparable Race Size 10.5/28.0R17

# Tread Width: 10.3"
# Section Width: 12.1"
# Diameter: 28.0"
# Circumference: 88.0"
# Rim Size: 9.0" - 11.0"

295/45 mt:

Approved rims 9.5" to 11".
Measuring rim 10"
Sidewall width 11.6"
Tread width 10.6"
Overall diamter 27.2"

So the 325 sidewall is .5" wider than the 295's but the 295's have .3" more thread on the ground than the 325's. The only thing that makes the 325 appealing is its a true 28" tall tire. But the 295's have more tread on the ground & are ALOT stickier so IMO its the 295's hands down

Here are my 295's on my durango rims

Just an FYI no drag radial is street legal, they have a D.O.T. rating only to be able to run street class.

Check all there websites and in the fine print it will say not street legal.

Would there be much of a visual height difference with 275/55/17's on the front and the 345/40/17's in the rear, or wise to have higher fronts than the rear?
Man...27" tires as dailys. Flatbed guy was cursing trying to load my truck on his flatbed and i am running 28.9" tires on a 4/6.

Have thought about just getting some rear 28" Blizzak lm-25 snow tires but i am second guessing now.

Well i think i am going to end up getting some 18x9 Procomp 1079 alloys and have them wrapped with NT555R 305/45/18.

Run them with my current 17x8 front rims w/ 275/55/17 Toyos and then decide if i want to upsize the fronts to 18's with cheap tires or just get 17x9 Procomp 1079' and keep using the Toyos.

Whats a common (cheap) size 18" tire size to look for fronts that closely match the height of the 305/45/18's

austin4.7
11-30-2010, 04:00 PM
go to tire.com and put in 96 ram and look for 18in size for that it should be around a 30 and then start going down sizes or google tire calculator and the miata one works pretty good

kay9
11-30-2010, 04:05 PM
Will do. Thanks for providing a starting point.

austin4.7
11-30-2010, 04:27 PM
depending on popularoty

255/50/18 = 28in
255/55/18=29in

running a lil narrow for the front

50 series is expinsive performance i mean really expensive

55 series seems popular but they are a lil pricey but performance tires

austin4.7
11-30-2010, 04:29 PM
245/55/18 is right at 28.6 witch woul;d be perfect if its available and cheap

radial t/a are $83 a piece from tire.com and it seems bfg makes a few and maybe you can find a hookup somewhere

adamsredlines
11-30-2010, 04:33 PM

rim wieght? you know centerline has discount wheels that are lighter then the durangos and are 18s and ask dline how much his boyds wiegh. if your willing to invest a lil and not just buy eagle or other steel/offroad wheels you can get a 18in tire/wheel setup that wieghs less then durango or any other factory alm wheel

otter1363
11-30-2010, 05:42 PM
you can always throw an adapter on and run pretty much any wheel you want provided you can get the back spacing worked out.

This site http://www.sizeitup.com/app/default.asp?login=1 has a pretty good utility to stuff what ever tire/wheel combo on and see how the sizing works out.

Thanks for the tire sizes. I am looking around for some 245/55/17's right now. Saw a lxofrum post where you could get BFG Radial T/A for $43.00 but to little too late as now they are back up to $63.00 a tire which is still cheap.

I have been considering the Centerline Tomahawk Champ XL's but man they are a pretty penny. Maybe two with the Nitto DR's and drive them with my current 17" rims and tires on the front. Few trips on my dirt road and one wont know the difference. Looks like a 18x8 with 5.0 BS.

DT had a few threads with customer service concerns and long wait times but that was some time ago.

Would love to get everything one shot but can only really spend up to 1000-1100 for rims/tires new or used.

Be nice to just get some M&H 275/50/17 and use them for rears full time and call it a day.

The Procomps 18x9 weigh around 28lbs but it will allow me to run a 28" Nitto DR and get some puncture resistance due to my area. Also should provide better traction than now since its just spinning when i make any attempt to get on the pedal at a light.
Track will have slicks.

Can't find the weight of dline's Boyd Smoothies 5x5.5.

Well this helps me out!! I have a 275/50r17 m h. I'm wanting a wider Dr in the back. I was also wanting to keep my 275s for the front. Maybe shorten the rim an inch in the front. This is mainly for looks. Would the 295s be a good choice. I'm running the ss/t rims.

Im a mt person all the way. I had m&h 275/50's for my 1st set of dr's that was on the truck way back when & there sucked compared to the 275/40's & 295/45's. But other people stand by the m&h's til the end. Its in what ya want i guess.

On a side note about my dr's for street use. I had to take them off. The dr's are already half worn out after a 1000 miles & about 30 passes so i took them off w/ hopes of them lasting longer for the track
