View Full Version : 4l80e converters
I'll be swapping in a 4l80e soon and just want some input on your 4l80e converters. Do you do a trade in program, because I have a 10" 545rfe 3400 billet front converter from you now? Or, would I be better off selling the converter when I get to that point? I am looking into your Pro stage I 245mm converter, so what is the HP rating on that converter? I plan on maybe 800hp at the crank eventually.
Thanks,
Luke

cant help but hijack... i give this whole idea 2 thumbs down... if you want good trans tuning, get a standalone... you can keep everything you have and just tune it all better

I don't see how a standalone would help me. I blow past the 1-2 shift point by 1200rpm since I installed a stall converter. Both stall converters did the same thing, one being an edge and the other a circle D. I haven't seen anyone with a standalone have the ability to make the shift occur any quicker. Every other shift is fine, but the 1-2 sucks ass in my truck.
If someone could prove to me that a standalone would solve my 1-2 shift issue, then I'd surely go that route, but I don't want to buy a standalone controller and then find out I have no better control over my shifting than Diablo had. Of course I would rather stick with the trans I have since it would be much cheaper and no adapter would be needed, but I just don't know if that controller would fix that issue since I don't know what causes the shift delay.
I seem to be the only person with this shift delay, so I don't know if that controller would even make a difference.
Would you still try a standalone in my situation?

It really sounds like Superchip has the answer.
I would go that route when the beta testing is done.

well your gonna need a standalone for your 4l80e anyway. The good news is that the same one can be used on both the 545rfe and the 4l80e.

Yea, that may fix it, but I still need tuning for my cam.

I actually planned on full manual valvebody since my truck isn't a daily driver. I really only drive it in good weather, or on the weekends. Plus, I like the control over the shifts that a full manual valvebody offers. Too bad there isn't a full manual valvebody shift kit for our trans, because that would surely solve the shift delay I have.

I would definitely try a standalone, because it's all in the tcm... The tcm is confused with your stall and causing the shift delay. TCM controls everything in the trans the only problem is the lack of tuning. With a standalone you will be able to do whatever you want with the trans.

You know, I'm wondering if it isn't just the way Diablo controls my trans. I think many of the issues I have are related to the trans and taking the trans out of the loop would solve many of my issues. I seem to be the only person with this issue, so maybe you're right and a standalone would be the answer. I know my truck has one tune for engine and trans unlike previous years which have a seperate tcm file, so that may be part of the issue too. I just think some of the things Diablo changes in the tune are changing parameters in the trans file as well, but the guys at Diablo surely don't know how to answer that.

You wanna know something really funky, my truck blows past the shift point on the 1-2 shift, but only with my track wheels/tires which are 26" tall. It doesn't do it on the 31" tall street tires.
But yea you've got it now, the trans does exactly what the tcm tells it to do. A 4L80E is the same way, so a standalone would be a lot less hassle. It would just be a matter of finding someone with adequate tuning abilities

Mine is the same. On street tires it shifts fine, but when I hook hard from a stop it blows way past the 1-2 shift point. How far does yours go past the shift point? Mine still tapped the limiter at 6200 with a 5000 1-2 shift setting. I run 28" et street bias ply tires for the track.
If I went the 4l80e route it would be full manual valve body using the th400 vacuum modulator to adjust the line pressure, so I'm not running full line pressure all the time.

I have no idea, but seems Diablo related to me. Idk if Ray or Jay's trucks do this too? Seems only Diablo people have this issue so far. I'm just sick of dealing with this issue and would like to have real control over my trans whether it be standalone controller or 4l80e.

yea, mine shifts at the rev limiter, it doesnt bounce off though...

I take it Diablo doesnt allow tire height changes? mine use to blow past it also. its speed sensor related plus you have 456's. it takes readings from driver front tire and rearend. shorter tires make the tcm think its going faster and with the stock tire calibtation its waaay off. i now run a 275/60 up front and was able to set my tire height in SC.

I can change tire size with diablo... And the 2-3 shift is always spot on... My street tires are a little off from factory size as well. And neither of us have 4.56s, at least I don't, still on the factory 3.92
3.92's here too, but I do have 4.56's waiting on me to install them. I even changed my speedo to match the rear tires and it made no difference for me. What did you do to get yours to work properly Ricky?

Now that i have a stroker is superchips still a good route to go with a built tranny. I know my days going to come this yr and want to be prepared. I was reading that getting a built 545 and superchips is that the best way to go, but since its been a yr since this thread has anything changed. I just dont want to go threw the same thing sam went threw

Our transmission is mechanically a 3 speed, so a manual valve body would most certainly suck.

Now that you've come to grips with the problem. Standalone will fix it.
