i have my exhaust set up to where i can run open header the y pipe is clamped to the headers and with a couple hangers being removed the entire y pipe can come off
would it be smart to run this way or not
just at the track

it would be some weight loss.

My truck ran like poo from my house to the muffler shop when I did my headers.... Maybe torque tubes would be a better idea?

I think it'll run slower with open headers. Weight gains wouldn't offset the lowend loss IMO.

if you made some torque tubes i would be interested to see the results

Make, using 3" pipe, extentions three foot long off each header collector with turndowns. Should work good, even better if you could put a H-Pipe crossover in the middle of the tubes.

sweet have get together with my welder
I believe jays torque tubes are 12" or something close to that. Now that my truck is back in storage i will be cutting the exhaust off and thinking of a new setup for this coming season.

I have been going through new ideas for my exhaust also. My next system will be all mandrel bent.

im just doing this for the track im going to have to find some rims here soon for my slicks

besides the low-end loss... running open headers will make your truck lean out, if your going to go that far with "track only" mods it would be best to get a separate track tune as well

got pics of torque tubes
This is what I came up with.
Basically a 12" slip fit tube and turn down with bungs for 02's.
Don't have a pic of it, but these days It's set up where the 12" tube stays on the headers, the turn downs come off and that's where the y-pipe connects. The advantage of that is swapping back and forth from tubes to full exhaust can be done without touching the 02's. Also the 12" tubes are the same length as high flow cats, they could be swapped in their place.
Oh also found the drone was less with the turn downs rotated towards the center a bit, that's why you don't really see the turn down's curve in the pic.

why not put a h pipe across ?
doe the 12 inches of pipe really do that much

Me gut says the 12" pipe should be more like 3-6 ft.
the physical constraints on the drives side make getting a smooth flowing pipe that long in there (mirrored on the other side) is the hard part.
12" is about minimal, you need some distance from the exit to the 02's so they don't see much back draft outside air at the sensor. My primary 02's are in the collector, followed by wideband followed by the rears.

ah i see the reason dont need the back draft makes sense now

I started out with 22" torque tubes and worked my way down. 9 1/2"-10" seems to be the best length. I since have ditched my tq tubes for 12" bullets which basically do the same plus I can run in Street Eliminator class.

with that said that could be a complete exhaust set up two bullet h pipe across before the bullets and be done with it
weight savings along would off set the ecut out

I've got about 12" tq tubes. No o2 sensors in the back. I've just got them wrapped and tucked out of the way.

this is a simple cheap mod for weight and high gains

Jay, did you ever take a picture of the torque tubes off of your headers? I would like to see what it looks like. I was contemplating running a setup like this with a crossover pipe going straight across and having single pipes out each side right where the bed starts

Jerry are those bullets street worthy? Noise wise.

There pretty loud. A lot like open headers.

No. They'll get you pulled over real quick. I have them on for a little back pressure and just in case I would like to run in Street Eliminator.

No I never took a pic of them. Maybe when it warms up here again.
