Offset-Ground Crank Question

how much more stroke can you get from how much you grind off when offset grinding a crankshaft? I am guessing the skill of the machinist is a factor?

my understanding is you get a bit less stroke increase than the amount ground off the diameter of the rod journal.

example: .25" offset grind to the rod journal = 1/4" smaller diameter rod journal & a bit less than 1/8" change in the radius of the rod journal, say 3/32" which pulls the piston down 3/32" further & pushes it up 3/32" further for 3/16" more stroke. is this about right?

I think that math would be correct...if its being ground concentrically.

so a true offset should increase stroke by more than the amount ground off the rod journal?

just wondering, because if I remember the #'s right, the offset ground 6.1 crank that make a 370 out of a 5.7 has about a 1/4" (.25") smaller rod journal and about a .22" increase in stroke. not sure, could be wrong on this.

You gain half of what you remove.

If you cut it .5 you get .25 stroke. Which in turn makes the piston travel .125 further in each direction.

so off-set grinding doesn't gain much. damn. I thought it gained close to what was taken off.

I agree. Sil spends more time on the forums than SC employees, which is another thing I think SC screws up on.

I think SC employees should be doing a lot of the SC Q & A and defending on all the internet forums instead of letting their poster-boy Silshemi do most of the work.
